£1.7m power upgrade set for Greater Manchester

A major £1.7m engineering project to improve the electricity supply to around 15,700 homes and businesses in Middleton and Oldham is due to start today.

Electricity North West, the company that owns and maintains the regional power network, is putting in place 5km of new improved underground cable between Gateway Crescent in Chadderton, Oldham to Ambleside Close in Langley, Middleton.

The project, which is due to be completed by August, will replace oil-filled cables which have been in place for around 50 years, with new environmentally-friendly and efficient cables.
Tim Groom, head of major projects for Electricity North West, said: “This essential project will help secure the supply of electricity to local residents and businesses for many years to come.

“It is also a great opportunity for us to replace aging oil-filled cables which have the potential to impact on the local environment with new up-to-date environmentally-friendly underground power cables.

“To carry out the work safely our engineers will need to install temporary traffic lights on certain roads along the route. We understand that this can be inconvenient, but overall the project will greatly benefit customers in the area not just in the near future, but for many years to come.”

Jim McMahon, MP for Oldham West and Royton, said: “I’m delighted that Electricity North West are investing in the local area to make sure that we continue to enjoy the benefits of having a reliable supply of electricity, which we can often take for granted.”

Engineers will keep any disruption to a minimum and there may be temporary traffic lights in place to allow the work to be carried out safely.
