Apprentices power through 400km bike ride

More than twenty electricity network apprentices have completed a pedal-powered journey across the North West in aid of charity.

Apprentices from Electricity North West conquered the 400km ride which started in Workington and finished in Salford.

The journey, which took place over five days, saw the group, which consisted of apprentices from IT, civils, operations and more, visit the majority of the power network operator’s depots and offices in the region.

Colleagues carried out the ride to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and National Energy Action and have so far raised just over £5,000.

Rachael Parr, Electricity North West’s people and corporate services director, said: “We’re extremely proud of everybody who took part in a challenge that raised funds for two great causes.

“And we’re also proud of the apprenticeship programme that we run and has and will continue to develop our engineers of the future.

“Apprentices are a big part of Electricity North West, we heavily invest each year to ensure they receive nothing but the best in terms of training, equipment and learning new skills.”

The ride saw apprentices visit 12 venues across the North West including depots in Carlisle, Salford, Blackburn, Preston and Kendal where they were welcomed and cheered on by colleagues.

During the five-day journey, some cyclists spent more than 35 hours in the saddle, many of whom hadn’t cycled 10 miles before the challenge started.

Chris Havard, Electricity North West’s apprenticeship programme and engagement manager, added: “It’s fair to say that by the time everybody arrived in Salford, there were a lot of weary bodies.

“But what a magnificent achievement carried out by everybody who took part, particularly the cyclists but also those who helped in the support vans.

“We had apprentices from our IT and civils departments take part as well as operational and not only was it an excellent team building exercise, but we’ve also managed to raise close to £5,000 with more funds still coming in for two charities that mean a lot to people within Electricity North West.”
