A homelessness prevention charity faced with the threat of redundancies and reduced services has been handed a lifeline.
After learning about the major financial struggles Manna House faced, power network operator SP Electricity North has reached an agreement with the Kendal-based charity for it to become a new funded partner.
The partnership has been agreed for an initial 12 months and will see the team at Manna House promote SP Electricity North West’s Extra Care Register, a free service which provides extra support to those who need additional help during a power cut.
Manna House works for the benefit of the public in South Lakeland, providing advice, advocacy and a drop-in support centre for those who are homeless, vulnerably housed, lonely or needing help.
Karen Hunter, SP Electricity North West’s customer inclusion manager, said: “Manna House plays an incredibly important role in the South Lakeland community, providing practical support, advice and a safe place for people facing some of life’s toughest challenges.
“We know how vital these services are and after hearing about the struggles, we wanted to come forward with a solution that allows the charity to keep its doors open.
“As a business, we’re committed to creating positive outcomes in the communities we serve, our partnership with Manna House will allow the charity to continue its valuable work and provide reassurance that support remains available.”
Last month, Manna House revealed its income had dropped by 38%, forcing it to cut staff hours to ensure its core opening times were protected.
The charity runs drop-in sessions three days a week, offering facilities for people to have a shower, wash their clothes and get a hot lunch, as well as giving housing and benefits advice. The organisation also has a pod which is used as temporary accommodation.
Andrea Aldridge, Manna House’s chief officer, added: “The support from SP Electricity North is fantastic news for Manna House and the people who rely on our services.
“Guaranteed funding is what we need, and this will make a real difference as we can now continue to provide practical support and plan with greater confidence for the future.
“We’re incredibly grateful the team at SP Electricity North West has recognised the value of our work and chosen to direct funds towards the charity.”
