Electricity North West powers ahead with £8m Metrolink project

The region’s network power operator is powering Greater Manchester’s transport network by diverting and installing 11miles of new electricity cable to make way for the Metrolink expansion to Trafford Park.

Engineers from Electricity North West were first onsite last month to start work on the two year project which will enable the new £350m six-stop Metrolink line to the Trafford Centre.

Working closely with Transport for Greater Manchester, Trafford Council and other utilities, Electricity North West will create innovative multi-utility trenches in order to keep any disruption to a minimum.

Adrian Devine, Asset Diversions Manager for Electricity North West, said: “We’re proud to be powering Greater Manchester’s transport network with the new Metrolink line to Trafford Park.

“It’s our responsibility to keep the lights on for five million homes and businesses

across the North West and to also connect communities by investing in essential major transport projects like the new Metrolink expansion.

“We’re working closely with key stakeholders including Transport for Greater Manchester to ensure the project is carried out safely and with minimum disruption as possible to local residents, businesses and commuters.”

Electricity North West have been involved in the latest expansion of the Metrolink network since 2007, which has included lines to Ashton-under-Lyne, Rochdale, Oldham, East Didsbury, Manchester Airport and a second crossing of Manchester City Centre .

Transport for Greater Manchester’s Metrolink Director, Peter Cushing, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Electricity North West again as work starts on the much-anticipated Trafford Park Line. They have a proven track record of delivering complex and often challenging projects.

“They played a key role in helping us to deliver the Second City Crossing, moving over 7km of underground cable and replacing two substations in the city centre, while keeping the power flowing for local residents and businesses.

“We look forward to continuing this successful partnership during the next step in Metrolink’s journey.”
