The firm, which operates the region’s power network, is responding after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for the North West and most of the country from today until Tuesday.

Forecasters are predicting strong gales of up to 70mph around exposed coasts and hills with other parts of the region experiencing winds of up to 60mph.

Strong winds can cause power cuts by blowing debris into overhead power lines or bringing lines down. In response, Electricity North West has increased the number of engineers on standby with colleagues across the organisation monitoring the forecast and ready to respond.

Mark Mercer, network systems manager at Electricity North West, said: “We monitor the weather daily and where necessary enact well developed plans for keeping the lights on.

“After the Met Office issued a weather warning, we immediately put plans in place to ensure we can respond if Storm Brendan causes any problems to the electricity network.

“We invest money throughout the year to ensure our network is resilient as possible but when the weather hits, we make sure our response is as quick as possible. Engineers are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to respond.

“If anybody does see any damage to overhead lines or electricity equipment, we urge them to stay away and report it to us immediately by calling 105.”
