Electricity North West warns power could be off until Monday (21:40 update)

Electricity North West has warned that some properties may be without power until Monday (28 December) following severe flooding across the North West.

  • 9,500 now without power across North West
  • Some properties may be without power until Monday due to severity of flooding
  • Radcliffe: 1,500 additional properties now without power after cables were damaged by floodwater
  • Rochdale: Power restored to 14,500 properties, 5,500 remain without power
  • Bury: Power restored to 1,600 properties, 700 remain without power after second substation flooded this afternoon
  • Padiham: 1,500 now without power after additional flooding
  • A number of other areas are also affected across Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cumbria

A number of rivers are expected to peak tonight between 10pm-12am as flooding continues throughout the region.

Flood defences at a number of electricity substation have been breached and engineers are working round the clock to restore power.

Engineers from Electricity North West remain on site and are working in difficult conditions to repair damage caused by heavy rain and subsequent floods across the region.

Chris Fox, systems manager for Electricity North West, said: “The flooding has meant that we can't access a number of substations to assess the damage, so we're warning customers that it may be Monday before we can restore some supplies.

"We're doing all we can and have restored as many properties as possible by switching as many as we can to other substations. We are continuing to bring generators to the area but can only connect them where it is safe to do so.

"We have teams ready to access the affected substations as soon as it is safe to do so to restore supplies as soon as possible."

Electricity North is sending food vans to a number of locations tomorrow morning to provide hot food to customers without power. Vans are currently scheduled to visit Radcliffe, Padiham and Rochdale. More information will be posted at www.electricitynorthwest.co.uk and on Twitter @ElectricityNW.
