Million pound project to upgrade Greater Manchester’s power network

30,000 homes and business in Greater Manchester are set to benefit from a £1m power network upgrade.

Engineers from Electricity North West, the region’s power network operator, are replacing 2.4km of underground electricity cables between Chadderton in Oldham and New Moston in Manchester.

The existing cables have kept the lights on in the area for more than 50 years and are being replaced as part of Electricity North West’s ongoing investment in the region’s infrastructure.

The project, which is due to be completed by May, will also replace oil-filled cables with new environmentally-friendly and efficient cables.

Paul McGonigle, transmission delivery manager, for Electricity North West, said: “This essential project will help secure the supply of electricity to local residents and businesses for many years to come.

“We’re also doing our bit for the environment, replacing aging oil-filled cables with new environmentally-friendly power cables. We’re investing £130m this year across the region, which includes £15.4m on upgrading underground power cables, to improve the network and make sure it’s fit for the future.

“Every day we take electricity for granted and we’re committed to ensuring that the lights stay on in everyone’s homes and businesses which is why this project is essential.”
Engineers will keep any disruption to a minimum and there may be temporary traffic lights in place to allow the work to be carried out safely.
