Power lines set to disappear from Cumbrian landscape

More than 1.6km of overhead power line near Carlisle in Cumbria is set to be removed by engineers from Electricity North West.

The region’s power operator is investing more than £200,000 to remove overhead power lines in Beaumont which have been in place for more than 50 years.

Working closely with the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) engineers last week started to replace the power lines with 2km of underground cable to help improve views for local residents and visitors to the area.

Paul McGonigle, programme delivery manager for Electricity North West, said: “The power lines have been a permanent fixture of the skyline near Beaumont since 1964 but residents will now witness the power lines and electricity poles come down.

“We’re delighted to be able to invest in the area and give something back to the community in which we operate.”

The project will last until Autumn and engineers will keep any disruption to a minimum. To allow the engineers to carry out the work safely temporary traffic lights will be in place and a temporary road closure near Priesthill for approximately three weeks which is scheduled to start in early July.

Graeme Proud, Solway Coast ranger for Solway Coast AONB, said: “We’re delighted that engineers have started to remove power lines in the area and the results will be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike for many years to come.

“It’s great to see Electricity North West working in the community and we’re looking forward to continue our successful partnership in the future.”
