Electricity North West, which operates the region’s power network, is currently carrying out the work in Ringley over the next eight weeks.
Investing more than £500,000, the firm is replacing the overhead power lines, which have been in place since the 1960s, with new underground power cables.
The work is being carried out on Red Rock Lane and the upgrade will maintain supply to more than 2,900 homes.
Paul McGonigle, project manager at Electricity North West, said: “The overhead power lines have been in place for almost 60 years and we’ve decided to proactively carry out improvements.
“We want customers to constantly receive a reliable power supply and that’s why we’re investing more than £500,000 installing new underground power cables.
“When major work is being carried out and roads are dug up, it isn’t an easy time for commuters or local residents.
“The project is expected to take around eight weeks and as always, we’ll be look to keep disruption to a bare minimum. I want to thank the people of Ringley for their co-operation and understanding whilst we are in the area.”
Whilst work is being carried out, temporary traffic lights have been installed on Red Rock Lane.
