National Apprenticeship Week (6-10 March) is organised by the National Apprenticeship Service to help promote apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
Electricity North West has welcomed almost 200 apprentices over the past ten years and current apprentice levels are at record numbers with 37 places available for enthusiastic and hands-on people across the North West.
Next week the region’s network power operator will be promoting the current opportunities available and what it’s like to be an apprentice on social media, including a live Q&A on Facebook and Twitter on the 8th March 12pm-1pm.
Peter Emery, CEO for Electricity North West, said: “We’re very proud that it’s our network that powers the success of the whole region, from the office blocks of Manchester to the farms and village tea rooms of Cumbria, delivering an essential service and keeping the lights on for five million people.
“We have a responsibility to the next generation to create opportunities and also to our customers across the North West.
“To support us delivering this service we are looking for people from across the North West who share that pride and enthusiasm.”
Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills Robert Halfon, said: “National Apprenticeship Week is the highlight of the apprenticeships year – it showcases the best of the best and celebrates the positive impact apprenticeships and traineeships have on learners and employers.
“There really has never been a better time to be an apprentice. I congratulate Electricity North West for getting involved, giving people a chance to climb up the career ladder and get on in the world of work.”
Due to the high demand for cyber security professionals in the UK for the first time Electricity North West is seeking a cyber security apprentice to help defend against any potential cyber threats to the power network.
Apprentice Charlotte Pearson, aged 23, from Kendal, said: “I decided to carry out an apprenticeship because it’s a good opportunity to learn and get a thorough understanding of the company and industry.
“I’ve enjoyed going out on site and seeing what happens in real life situations to keep the lights on.
“I would recommend being an apprentice because you can further your education whilst specialising in a role and it’s a good route for career progression.”
There are also a variety of other apprenticeships available which specialise in overhead power lines, substations, underground electricity cables, telecoms and vehicle mechanics located across the North West from Manchester to Carlisle. Click here to find out more and apply.
