Power operator seeks bright sparks from across the North West for apprentice scheme

The region’s power network operator, Electricity North West, is seeking a new generation of energy apprentices to help keep the lights on across the North West for years to come.

To mark ten years of the apprentice programme Electricity North West is offering the highest number of places to 37 enthusiastic and hands-on people across the North West.

The two and three year programmes provide an opportunity for local people to learn a trade for life after leaving school, college or seeking a new career. The apprenticeships specialise on overhead power lines, substations, underground electricity cables telecoms, cyber intrusion and vehicle mechanics.

Helen Sweeney, customer and corporate services director for Electricity North West, said: “The North West is a vibrant, exciting place to live and work with incredible people and businesses and a reputation for innovation and growth.

“We’re very proud that it’s our network that powers the success of the whole region, from the office blocks of Manchester to the farms and village tea rooms of Cumbria, delivering an essential service and keeping the lights on for five million people.

“To support us delivering this service we are looking for people from across the North West who share that pride and enthusiasm.”

Apprentice Annabel Hall, aged 18, from Kendal, said: “I decided to carry out an apprenticeship as it is a good alternative to university, with on the job training and relevant qualifications being paid for.

“I have always wanted to go into engineering and Electricity North West offered me a great opportunity. I have enjoyed working in many areas of the company and with a wide variety of people.

“I would definitely recommend being an apprentice at Electricity North West as you gain experience and knowledge that on the job training gives you.”
