Power restored to another 1,100 properties (17:00 update)

Engineers from Electricity North West have restored power to another 1,100 properties affected by ex-hurricane Ophelia, taking the total restored since yesterday to more than 19,000.

Engineers are continuing to work to restore power to the remaining 700 properties in Cumbria that remain without power following yesterday's severe gales.

Electricity North West has sent two food vans to Watermillock near Helvellyn in Cumbria where around 200 properties remain without power.

Chris Fox, network systems manager for Electricity North West, said: “We've made excellent progress throughout the day and we're still working hard to reconnect all customers.

"We have teams on site restoring power to the final properties, and we have made such good progress that we have agreed to release our contractors tomorrow who will travel to Ireland to assist with restoration efforts there.

"When we have restored all properties in our area, we will look to send some of our own engineers and linespeople to Ireland to help too."

If you see any lines down do not approach them, call Electricity North West directly on 105 and report it. You can also ring the same number to report a power cut 24 hours a day seven days a week.
