Electricity North West engineers are underway with a major project which will improve reliability on Carlisle’s power network.

The region’s power network operator is investing £1m in the underground electricity infrastructure which will improve reliability and in the longer-term attract new business and investment in the city.

Work is progressing across Bridge Street as teams are replacing and diverting 1km of underground electricity cables.

Once complete, more than 5,000 homes and businesses are expected to benefit from the new electricity supply.

Charlotte Pearson, who is overseeing the project in Carlisle for Electricity North West, said: “As the region’s power network operator, we always want to provide the best service for our customers.

“The investment we are making is significant, upgrading the infrastructure will not only attract new businesses and investment, but firms will be able to adopt low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles.”

Already, 500m of underground duct (what the cable sits in) has been installed and once teams have completed work on Bridge Street, work will progress towards Devonshire Walk and Viaduct Estate Road. Electricity North West hand delivered letters to homes and businesses in the area prior to work starting.

Traffic management including temporary traffic lights, lane closures and road closures are being used so teams can work safely in the highway. All work was agreed with the highways authority in advance.

Julie Minns, MP for Carlisle and North Lakes, added: “This is an important project for Carlisle—protecting homes, supporting businesses, and keeping the power flowing.

“It’s good to see Electricity North West planning ahead, anticipating the growth in demand that the transition to cleaner energy will bring, and helping local people to get the reliable service they deserve.

Work is expected to be completed by June and updates will be provided throughout the project.
