SP Electricity North West has launched its biggest ever flexibilty tender opening up £14 million of opportunities for energy providers, businesses, and community groups across the region to support the future of energy use, and the UK’s green growth ambitions.
The Autumn 2025 tender calls for 1,588 MW of flexibility capacity across 220 locations in Cumbria, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire — supporting the region’s transition to a smarter, cleaner, and more resilient energy system.
SP Electricity North West’s Distribution System Operations (DSO) Commercial Lead, Paul George, said: “Flexiblity tenders of this size reflect our ambition to pursue a future where flexibility is the cornerstone of a smarter, more sustainable energy system. Also, by unlocking significant low-voltage (LV) opportunities, we’re not just expanding access, we’re enabling communities, innovators, and local providers to actively shape the grid of tomorrow.
“This tender reflects our long-term vision: a dynamic, decentralised network that responds to the needs of stakeholders across our region.”
Flexibility services allow customers and providers who can adjust their generation or demand at certain required times, sometimes known times and sometimes unexpected, to get paid for doing so. This prevents situations such as power cuts from a sharp increase in demand, but also helps to keep costs down, and make better use of the network that already exists.
Across the region, requirements are distributed as follows:
- Cumbria- 40 locations, 1,038 MW, more than £5.7 million
- Greater Manchester- 127 locations, 484 MW, more than £5.5 million
- Lancashire- 53 locations, 65MW, more than £2.2 million
SP Electricity North West continues to expand flexibility, making it easier for a wide range of providers, from local energy projects to large commercial operators, to take part. Plus, as we are a social DSO, all work ultimately strives to benefits the communities we serve by enabling everyone across the North West to decarbonise in a fair, affordable and timely way.
This growing programme supports investment in local clean energy while creating new income streams for participants and helping keep bills lower for customers across the region.
