Weather watch March 2020

A mixed month ahead following on from both cold and warm bursts in March.

A varied month which brought wet conditions along with some drier, sunnier spells towards to the end of March.

Fresh off three storms in February, March’s weather proved to be much calmer however it saw the Coronavirus pandemic escalate throughout the country.

Spring is here but the country remains on lockdown. Electricity North West is enforcing extra measures throughout the Coronavirus pandemic and all information can be found by visiting www.enwl.co.uk/coronavirus.

March’s weather

February proved to be wild, wet and windy with notable storms hitting the region but March saw conditions ease with a gradual drying trend as we experienced warm, dry and sunny weather to close out the month.

The start of the month mirrored much of February with some windy and often very wet days for the first week and into the second week. However, rainfall was nearer to normal when compared to the record-breaking February.

Middle weeks of the month saw a gradual shift into more high pressure dominated with dry, calm, and eventually sunny days. However, the high pressure came with more northerly winds and temperatures dropped below average. The last week of March saw some areas of the region experience the coldest overnight lows of the 2019-20 winter season.

April’s weather

As we enter spring, we’re expecting a mixed April month regarding the weather.

The first half of the month will see high pressures so calmer and drier conditions are expected, however, it is expected to be cooler than normal with overnight frost expected.

Second half of the month and it looks likely high pressure will shift away and allow low pressure tracks to return, bringing wetter, windier weather but also some milder air from the South West.

The change in the weather will be a gradual change taking place over a week or two around the middle of the month, rather than an abrupt shift.

Temperatures will likely be quite changeable, with mild days mixed in with some cold, winter-like ones as Atlantic weather systems move through.
