Storm Cumbria Lancashire

SP Electricity North West responding to Storm Boelo

SP Electricity North West engineers have restored power to more than 30,000 properties across the region affected by Storm Boelo, as engineers work to restore the remaining 22,000.

Teams continue to battle the elements as high winds and heavy rain have caused tree branches and debris to cause widespread damage to overhead lines in Cumbria and Lancashire.

More than 250 individual damages to the network have already been recorded as wind speeds have hit 78mph with gusts of up to 70mph expected until late Sunday evening.

As wind speeds remain incredibly high, it is unsafe for overhead lines teams to climb poles and repair damage until wind speeds decrease. Engineers are working hard focusing on remotely switching affected supplies to other parts of the network to restore as many properties as possible, until the wind reduces.

SP Electricity North West has set expected restoration times to 6pm on Tuesday (27 Oct). This is following customer feedback on wanting to know the 'worst case scenario'. As soon as the wind drops enough to allow engineers to climb, they will be repairing the network as quickly and safely as possible and restoration times will be updated.

Alan Astall, SP Electricity North West's head of network control, said: "The impact of Storm Boelo has been significant, causing widespread damage to our network affecting thousands of properties in Cumbria and Lancashire.

"The severe weather means incredibly difficult conditions, but rest assured, our engineers have been and will continue to work tirelessly to repair faults and restore power to those affected."

Amber and Yellow Met Office weather warnings for wind remain in place until 9pm this evening.

SP Electricity North West's contact centre has already handled more than 5,500 calls since Storm Boelo started to affect the region yesterday evening.

"We've drafted additional resources from across the business so more people can answer calls and proactively contact impacted customers," added Alan Astall.

"We know it is difficult to be without power, especially if you rely on it for medical equipment or have other needs, so if you need any additional support, please contact us and let us know so we can help."

If you see damage to the network, stay well clear and report it to SP Electricity North West on 105 so they can make it safe.

The quickest way to report a power cut is utilising the SP Electricity North West website by visiting www.enwl.co.uk/powercuts, or get in touch with SP Electricity North West on X or Facebook, or by calling 105 for free from any phone.

Further updates will also be provided on www.enwl.co.uk/Boelo.
